The Godfather, after all, is as much about merging into mainstream culture as it is about violent deeds: Vito Corleone fosters hopes that his son Michael can integrate into the WASP power structure, become a senator, a governor, and even after those dreams are dashed by Michael’s increasing involvement in family business, the aspiration to escape into corporate respectability persists. He may not have been the first rapper to style himself a don during the ’90s, but his performance has certainly continued for the longest period of time: If the dapper crime lord pictured on the Reasonable Doubt cover in 1996 would go on to cross over into legitimacy, that too could be seen as part of the act. Yet even in the circle of fanatic mob aficionados, Jay-Z has managed to stand out. When asked about the album, Jay-Z said that he’d gotten into a zone and felt like he put every guest artist and producer in the perfect place on each track of the album. Jay didn’t stay on for the whole tour a few dates in, he had a conversation with Puff and excused himself from the tour, stating in an interview, “I felt like I was selling myself short.” Jay told the media that he’d be getting “into the office” to build his company, and the studio to make his next album. No fool himself, Jay-Z knew this, and we know he did: Jay was the opening act on Puffy’s No Way Out Tour that year. Anything that didn’t sound like Bad Boy music just didn’t register with the public.
